OpenBack Beginner Guide: Your First Match

Learn how to start an OpenBack match, expand safely, grow your economy, and survive your first wars.

Choose a useful starting position

Look for room to expand before choosing your starting tile. Open directions are usually easier than a narrow pocket between strong nations. Coastlines can become valuable, but safe land growth matters more during the opening seconds.

Expand without emptying your nation

Expansion uses troops. Sending everything creates a large border that you cannot defend. Use controlled attacks, allow population to recover, and keep enough strength to discourage neighboring players.

  • Take nearby neutral land before fighting an equal opponent.
  • Adjust the troop percentage instead of always sending the same amount.
  • Pause when troop recovery becomes slow.
  • Watch every border after meeting another player.

Turn gold into a plan

Buildings are investments. Cities support population, ports and factories support income, defense posts strengthen important borders, and military structures unlock specialized attacks. Buy the building that solves your current problem instead of buying every available type.

Read the map before attacking

A smaller nation is not always easy to defeat. Check its troops, allies, defenses, and whether a third player can attack while you are committed. Good attacks improve your border shape and leave enough strength to survive the next response.
